Don't forget to check out justinguitar. He always gives good advice. And there are a list of good songs to play and learn by ear on his sites, with just a few hints for the beginning of transcribing :)

You should not start figuring things by ear with solo songs. It's too difficult in the beginning. Start with some easy riffs. There is this great riff from Lenn Kravitz "Always on the run" very groovy. Check it out, and try figuring SUCH things. But not Gustavo Guerra's. And later when you feel it's easy to transcribe little stuff, try to figure Gustavo's solo. But if you try now you'll take like 2 months. Sense? Take a look at Lenny Kravitz's stuff. It's amazing ! And not that hard ;)

A very common exercise is to sing exactly what it is you are playing while playing. Steve Vai is one who frequents a recommendation to use this technique. If this is too difficult at the beginning, play long notes and try and sing along to it. Then move on to small melodies, and so on.

If you're good enough to play this you don't need a tab. Learn it by ear. If you can't learn it by ear, you won't be able to learn it with a tab.
