Zhang Ziyi is a very talented actress. I loved her in The Road Home. It's harder for others because they have to land a Hollywood part to become world famous.
btw, have you seen Painted Skin? It has an all-star cast of Vicki Zhao, Zhou Xun, Sun Li, Chen Kun, and Donnie Yen (and Jane Zhang as the theme song singer, just like in the Banquet). Absolutely beautiful movie without Zhang Ziyi.

you forget the fact that zhang ziyi has more talent than zhu xun, plus, its not easy to bring up a star, support many more new actresses and the old ones like Gong Li or Zyi would lose their prestige in the movie industry.

I dont agree to that statement...
Europeans/whites are so ethnocentric. The themes Shakespeare used in his plays are universal.. revenge, betrayal. love, loyalty..And their expression through art cannot be credited to one particular group of people.. These themes have been used over over and over again in American Cinema. But no one says anything about hollywood copying shakespeare. OMG Imperialistic thinking carries the Curse of the Golden Flower.. Pay attention to the movie colonizing Europeans ,Greed,lust carries a curse..
I love the look of such films but I feel like it's the same story over and over again and the fact that the same actors appear in multiple of the genre's movies doesn't help either. I mean seriously I almost feel like I've seen this film already and it's the first time I hear about it.

yes, I saw this film last night and was quite angry because I felt exactly what you felt. it's the same crap over and over again. I saw Muk Gong just a few days before. I'm really tired of all these ancient China killing movies. very pretty, but that's about it.
what i really want to see now is more taiwanese-chinese make it in to hollywood. many of them have great talent and star quality as well. Lets put Taiwan on the map! whoohoo!
if anyone from the chinese cinema make it big in hollywood, i hope its not ziyi zhang. after seeing her in so many movies, shes getting boring and flat. and to me, her face is kind of peasant-ish, unlike many other chinese actress who is much more beautiful and has better star quality.
