It means we've lost, among other things, our sense of humanity and appreciation for authentic things in our pursuit for the comfort of conformity and living with apparent material prosperity. We buy cheap shitty little cookie cutter houses made of plastic, which have no individuality or character. We're rich in cheap, meaningless things, and very poor in things of quality. Ironically, the hippies who ate her up at the time are the ones who largely continued it.

It means Reynolds was anti-conformity -- which was the fashion at the time.
This may be one of the greatest songs ever written. It's on 1 minute long but you can just picture what she's trying to show and she couldn't be more clear.
