To Xoloxum : Yes you have a point here but It is only ugly if you compare it with adult's laptops where the case is different here... it is just designed .for kids and yes it is plastic so that it could be dust proof , spill proof , rainproof as it is going to be used by children especially in the 3rd world .
xoloxum (Sunday 3rd of August 2008 10:28:49 PM)
Kids in the third world deserve better computers. I bet that if u used that computer for a while you would soon realize how useless that thing is.

I have to agree with you on this one. While the intention should be good, just wait till these kids see what a real laptop looks like. By handing in these inferior plastic laptops it further promotes a sense of inequality between the Africans and the Western society. It's like telling them they don't deserve the real thing.

are you guys completely delusional? have you no sense of perspective? the amount of capability that they've crammed into a drop-proof, waterproof machine that sells for under $200 is simply amazing. the whole point is to mass-distribute educational tools to 3rd world counties.. now would you rather do that at $200 a pop or $2000 a pop? they've just made that goal 10 times more feasible; what have you done? complained about the small screen? you're exactly the snarky biters that he's referring to
cartoonjerk (Monday 17th of November 2008 01:29:14 PM)
I'm not being delusional, just realistic. I said that the intention should be good and he is definitely making an effort to help the 3rd world. It is indeed very impressive in terms of it's design. I don't think it's being really realistic though. The computer, although interesting, is inferior to the other computers in the USA. To sale that in mass for $400 dolar is, well kind of realistic.
cartoonjerk (Monday 17th of November 2008 01:30:33 PM)
Oops, I meant to say unrealistic.
cartoonjerk (Monday 17th of November 2008 01:35:56 PM)
I would like you to use that laptop in real life. I can buy a, well, normal laptop in real life with $400. You can't completely ignore the psychology impact of the African children when they see a real laptop either. Although the laptop's function is very impressive, design wise, it suck. It doesn't take a snarky biter to make that comment. I would at least make it decent.
slonopochron3000 (Monday 17th of November 2008 02:30:10 PM)
i have used it in real life, many times. it's actually really awesome. i just think you're holding it to some really twisted standards; you're looking a gift horse in the mouth. the design is perfect for where it's needed. and i don't understand what you're hinting at about the psychological impact of the inequity between the OLPC and a "real laptop". that comparison isn't even appropriate.
cartoonjerk (Monday 17th of November 2008 04:28:52 PM)
The design in terms of function is definitely impressive, that I think I have already addressed in my previous posts. The actual surface surface design is what makes it not so desirable. You are ignorant to the prime in terms of political and social sense. By giving these "not so up to technology and 'look' standards" laptops, people can view it as a the western world thinking they don't deserve something real and better. At least make it look professional and not like some kind of toy.
