Barry Lyndon (1975) is an award-winning period film by Stanley Kubrick, based on the novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon (1844) by William Makepeace Thackeray. It recounts the exploits of an unscrupulous 18th century Irish adventurer (Redmond Barry) during his rise and fall within English society. Ryan O'Neal stars as the title character.

I wish Kubrick had been able to make that biopic he titled NAPOLEON. It woulda been a fucking huge epic that detailed Bonaparte's life from toddler to trapped on Elba until his death. Jack Nicholson impressed Kubrick with his performance in Easy Rider, and he was the first choice for the role. It was to be his next film after 2001, but he had trouble with getting investors and did Clockwork Orange. He got military men to be extras in the battle scenes, but the studio said it was too costly
