I'm taking a Western Civ. history class right now and here is what I know... The Persians were on their way to Greece, the only way for the ground troops to get through was at Thermopylae. The Greeks decided that this was the best place to fight since numbers didn't really count in that narrow pass.

The Spartans were the ones who led the several thousand Greek troops. When they found out that the Persians found the pass and made it through, it is presumed that Leonidas, being the head of the entire army, ordered many of the Greeks to retreat except for the Spartans (The Thesbians stayed though, and the Thebes were made to stay).
