Swedish Helicopter Crash

Back

6/21/05 - STOCKHOLM, Sweden I got this footage from last week. In the paper they say the "video showed the rotor blades of the Lithuanian-registered MI-2 helicopter hitting a tree, then clipping the top off a lamp post." I never noticed the lamp being cut down, but you can clearly see it if you focus on it. This was the guy's birthday present, a helicopter ride! Instead he got a helicopter ride to the hospital.

he was having a idiot day. should have auto it down and landed safe. no question ask. the piolet is at fault all the way. if you have eyes you can see he had plenty of time to land before crashing

Yeah. That pilot was definetly having control issues

*sigh* You weren't there, you didn't fly it... all you have is a video and highsight.

Cant you just turn the key off and get out?

Honestly... look at the video clip from 21 seconds to 30 seconds. Are you really saying he could not power down in that time frame. He does have pitch and yaw control. His lateral motion is minimal. I stand by my comments that he could have set it down. He had 20 prior seconds of "hmm... why is my chopper not going up?" If you are able to recover into a reasonably static hover 3 feet above the ground and you could not obtain lift after 20 prior seconds of try... PUT IT DOWN.
mkarnerfors (Tuesday 2nd of December 2008 02:57:10 AM)
But sure... since you know so much better, call the Swedish Accident Investigation Board and tell them that their investigation is flawed and that you, from watching a YouTube video, know so much better than they do. Go right ahead... I dare you.
mkarnerfors (Tuesday 2nd of December 2008 02:44:10 AM)
He doesn't have the margins needed to perform a safe and controlled landing, As you can see he's drifting... not really able to maintain stable hover. If he sets down at that point, he's risking tipping the helicopter and getting into a dynamic rollover, from which he will not be able to recover because he doesn't have the power needed to quickly get up again. This means that the rotor will be starting to slice up ground and, in the worse case, onlookers. Hindsight is 20/20.

WHAT??? For the first 30 seconds of the video the helicopter was hovering about 2 - 4 feet above the ground and traversed laterally at a slow manageable speed. Nobody was standing in the initial flight path??? If you either reduce the throttle or or let up on the collective lift the chopper would lower itself due to gravity vs. thrust. 30 seconds of dead lift is a respondable situation. That is just poor airmanship! No excuses! Yes I have aborted a landing... HE SUCKS.

Armchair pilot-troll is trolling... go away.
